Reflection (December 20)
We worked on our final reflection, writing the script for our final video. Tyrell, Brandon, Brooke and I all pitched in on giving ideas towards it. We all decided that Brooke and I could film it after school, as we ran out of time to finish at school.
Reflection #7 (December 20th)
On December 20th, Brandon, Terrell, Kellie, and I all worked on our script for the final reflection video. We talk about how the project effected us, what worked for us, what didn't work for us, and what we learned. I feel like we got a good amount of work done today. We didn't get to our filming of the video today , so Kellie and I filmed it after school at her house. So we were unable to have our whole group in the video but there wasn't any other time for us to meet.

Reflection
Today in class we presented our project. I feel that we did well, but we didn't quite know what everyone was going to say at the beginning. I fell that this may have lost us marks.
Reflection
Today in Class we presented our project to the class. Overall I think the presentation went well except for the fact that we didn't really know what we were going to say at first but it came together. The project also came together in the end better than I thought it would just because of the couple issues we ran into and the few set backs we had. I am really proud to have been a part of this group because I think we really made a difference to Children in our community.

My implentation Video
This is my final video to raise awareness about abusive artificial tools and natural horsemanship.
Reflection #7
Reflection #7 Dec.13th
Today I had my sister video tape me working with my pony Kody on the parelli games of natural horsemanship for my video. Pat Parelli is a natural horsemanship trainer who is very popular in the indestry. My video is almost completed just some last minute editing and it will be ready for viewing for my presentation tomorrow :)
Reflection #6
Reflection #6 Dec.12
Today I got tons of clips of working with my pony Kody on riding bareback with out a bridle, a bit, or a saddle just a small rope around his neck while jumping, galloping and stearing. I have also showed the process of how I got to that point with my pony of being able to have full trust and freedom for him and the main thing is to have fun. I als added all my clips to the video and took clips of my sister working with her pony Frodo.
Reflection #5
Reflection #5 Dec.11
Today I worked on my challenge and my final video for my project. I have made huge progression with my video by adding clips of me working with my horse Joker and pictures of harsh artificial photos I have also completed my challenge video with a solution. Right now I am trying to catch up with all of my reflections so far I am almost finished.
Reflection #6 (December 13th)
Today in class we brainstormed again, coming up with ideas for our Implementation video. For the next video, we are thinking about finding some sort of game that could catch on quickly. We have caught up fully on our reflections, as we were a couple behind previously. After shool I plan to go over to Brooke's house and work a bit on editing the videos and coming up with more ideas, because we need to film our "in progress" video by tomorrow.
Reflection #6 (December 13th)
On December 13th Kellie and I spent block 2 still researching more info about our big idea. We think that if there were some kind of game that could catch on quickly and that is addictive then many more people would exercise for fun. We are planning to get together after school today and work on getting our second video started and planned. We are still in the process of our implementation video. But without having all of our group members here, it's been difficult for things such as filming.
reflection 5
On Dec 12th we worked on our video and our reflections and Terrell was not here again
Reflection #5 (December 12)
On December 12th, our group members and I spent the beginning of block 2 catching up on reflections and adding the finishing touches to our first group video(Proposal & Outline video). Terrell was absent again today. We are continuing research for our implementation video. In block 3 Kellie and I did more research.
Reflection 4
On Dec 11th me and my group got our finished our group video but we finished the video without Terrell
Reflection #5
Today we handed out our survey to two of the four classes we had emailed, Drama and Psychology. We also handed out the survey to our class. When we handed out our video's started filming the Implementation video.
We started watching the movie "Island on the Edge", which Mr. McDonald had brought us, we didn't have quite enough time to finish so we'll try and do that tomorrow.

Reflection #4
Today we printed out about 60 of our surveys, but unfortunately we didn't have enough time to start handing them out. We also re-emailed the teachers to ask if we could do it tomorrow. We will start our Implementation video tomorrow.
Reflection of day five
Today we handed out our survey to the drama, psychology, and our own class and while reviewing the answers there was a lot of i don't knows. We started to plan out our posters for the next day. And in our spare time we watched the video of food sustainability on Vancouver Island that was given to us by Mr McDonald.

Reflection day 5
Today we handed out our surveys to the drama class, the psychology class, and the PL10 class. The variety of answers was interesting, and we got a lot of "I don't know" answers, particularly on the "What is kale?" question. We took some video of the surveying process and uploaded it to a computer to use in our implementation video. We also got a video about food sustainability on Vancouver Island from Mr. McDonald, which we started and will watch whenever we have some extra time.

Today in our group I filmed and took photos of our group cleaning, ordering, packing and wrapping our gifts fro the hospitalized children. I also filmed Colin, Noah and Justin's personal reflections. All that's left for our group to do is film our implementation video and for me to get it edited and uploaded by tomorrow.
Reflection #5
Today, my group and I worked on making a list on what the school really needs in the earthquake boxes. the school earthquake boxes were vary tragic and the earthquake boxes were not up to date every 5 years...
reflection #4
today I helped Teighen upload the videos again because it wasn't allowed to upload the videos to the blog, so I had to upload the video to Youtube and then send the link to the blog.
We also talked about how many students were at the school.

Reflection
Today I started out by organizing and grouping all the toys the teachers and staff donated to us with Sydney. After we organized the toys, Noah and Colin cleaned the toys and the rest of the group including myself packed the toys into boxes and then wrapped them. Sydney and I made a Christmas card from "Santa" and we are now almost ready for tomorrow!!
Reflection
today I started out by gathering all of the toys that were bought and donated. I got boxes and wrapping paper to store them and make them pretty. Brooke, Noah, Colin and I washed and dried all the used toys, Then Brooke and I boxed and wrapped all the toys. I then made a merry Christmas card to the hospital. We are now almost ready to bring the toys to the hospital!
Reflection December 12th #5
Today, we have spent some time posting and editing the reflections we forgot to do. Terrell is not here once again, we will just have to continue the project as if he were. We need to get video clips/pictures of all of us working at the computers and other stuff too. We don't know 100% what we plan to do yet, but we are leaning in the direction of maybe creating a new game. A game that would be addicting, so then it would catch on easily.
Reflection #4 (December 11)
On December 11, we had one block to work on our project. We spent that block filming our video for the Proposal and Outline of our project. Terrell wasn't here today so Kellie filled in for his lines in the video. We had to do a couple of takes, but once we got it done we uploaded it to the blog. Afterwards we spent some time brainstorming for our Implementation Video.
December 11th reflection #4
On December 11th my group worked on filming our proposal video finally. It took about twenty tries, because I could not stop laughing every time. But when we finally got it finished it was good. The quality is not the best, as it was filmed with my blackberry that has a terrible camera. We uploaded it to the block yesterday as-well, it was difficult to record because Terrell wasn't here, so I had to memorize his part also. We've brainstormed for our Implementation video, but our plan is not quite panned out yet.
Day 4 Reflection
-We called Adam Olson; a council member in the municipal government
-Uploaded video to the blog

Reflection December 7th #3
On December 7th, our group worked on writing the script for our first main video. We researched our topic, and some ideas for the script, such as health concerns/diseases. We printed off four copies (one for each person) so we could take them home and memorize them for Tuesday. We've been brainstorming some ideas for our implementation video, but not very much yet, as we still need to film our group's proposal video.
Reflection #4
Reflection #4 Dec.10
Today I video taped Claire and her horse Zodiac riding in the ring working on natural horsemanship on horseback for my final raising awareness video. I also video taped my sister working with her pony Frodo riding bareback in a rope halter and lope reins for my video it shows how much she has worked with Frodo in trust and having fun. Later this week i will video tape me working with my pony Kody with liberty work on the ground and on horseback. Liberty means having freedom with out any tools or halters just the horse gaining trust with out lead ropes.
Day 1 Reflection
-Brainstorming ideas for the group
-Decided on making our group about the current voting system and how to change it
-Decided on making our group about the current voting system and how to change it
Reflection #3 (December 7th)
On December 7th, our group did some more research on stats and found information for our project. After Kellie and I finished writing the Script, we gave each group member a script copy so they could study over the weekend and know their parts for filming our group proposal video.
Q and A from Claire of key equine
My Questions and Answers from Claire of Key Equine
Claire is a horse trainer that boards her horse on our property she believes in natural horsemanship so asked her some questions for her to answer here are the questions and her replys:
1. What do you think about lunging systems, strong bits, martingales,
side reins, and draw reins being called methods of training?
I believe that draw reins, martingales, strong bits and things of that
nature are quick fixes to problems that could be solved without these
tools if people had the knowledge and patience to address the root of
issues with horses as opposed to trying to just make the symptom go away
without looking at the cause. For example people will put tight
nosebands on horses to make them keep their mouths closed... but if they
would learn how to teach their horse to soften and accept the bit and
rein contact, then there is no need for any nosebands at all. I believe
the same goes for all the tools that you listed, they are quick fixes.
The only exception to that rule might be side reins, I haven't come to a
conclusion on them yet, however I will say that I think 95% of the time
they are misused, but perhaps the potential is there for them to be a
useful tool in the right hands and with the right homework done
beforehand.
2. How did you learn about natural horsemanship and why did you want to start training horses?
I have wanted to train horses since I was a kid, I always thought it
sounded like the best job ever, and I am now lucky enough to be able to
make a living from it! I used to train jumpers, but the more I worked
with traditional jumper trainers, the less I liked their methods. I
started to question why I was training horses at all and thought about
getting out of the business all together. Around that time a friend of
mine had her horse in a clinic with Josh Nichol who does a slightly
different style of horsemanship that he calls "relational horsemanship".
I went to see one day of the clinic and I was so in awe of how he
trained horses and the understanding he had of horse psychology, it
totally rekindled my passion to start working with horses in a totally
different way, to work with their minds instead of just using their
bodies... I never looked back and have been training following Josh's
methods ever since then.
3. Did you ever use artificial training tools before you were exposed to natural horsemanship?
I used to use all sorts of artificial training tools before I met Josh
and learned that there was a better way of doing things. I remember
thinking there must be a better way and that it didn't feel right to me
even at that time, but I had no role models that could lead me down a
different path. I try to remember this when I'm dealing with people who
still use these types of gadgets and methods that I no longer agree
with. I remember that I was there once and that most people do want to
do what is best for their horses but they just don't know how to get
what they want from their horse without these tools.
4. How long have you been a trainer for?
I have been training horses since I was a teenager, I worked for years
as a groom, then as a working student, both at jumper stables. I
branched off on my own and started my own business about 9 years ago.
5. have you worked with other natural horsemanship trainers?
I have worked with Josh Nichol for the past six years, learning from him
and attending lots of clinics, etc. I have also worked alongside a few
other horsemanship trainers over the years, where we are both learning
and can share ideas and help each other out as we are developing horses
and run into problems along the way, it is important to have a support
system, especially when your training style is not the norm.
6.How do you keep yourself form getting frustrated with owners/horses?
Keeping from getting frustrated is something that I think is a struggle
for a lot of people, myself included. I don't have a hard time staying
patient with owners, because most of the people I work with are really
keen to learn and love what they are doing with their horses, so they
make it easy for me! When it comes to training the horses is it
sometimes harder to stay patient and relaxed, but it is so important. I
try to remind myself that horses don't do things to make our lives hard
or cause is frustration, they do things because they don't understand
our requests, or because they are acting on their instincts (which
usually results in the opposite of what we want!). I try to remain as
calm as possible and think of how I can help the horse. I think of how I
can approach something differently or go back and break the exercise
down to make it simpler for the horse to understand. There are many ups
and downs when training horses so I try to focus on the positives as
much as possible and the great days make the hard days worthwhile.
7. Have you helps horses with owners that think natural horsemanship is
all fake/make believe and think it doesn't fix any problems?
I haven't helped many people that don't already have some interest in
horsemanship, partly because our paths just don't cross very often, and
partly because I'm not really interested in trying to convince people
that what I do is worthwhile. I feel like my energy is better spent on
people who realize their horses need help and are keen to learn how to
develop a relationship with them where everyone can succeed and be
happy!

Reflection Tuesday 11th Dec
Today in my group I did a multitude of things. I, for one, re-filmed and edited our challenge video and filmed Justin's and Noah's personal reflections. I also created a custom soundtrack for our project overall. As a whole, I think we're working really well, aside from a few little bumps here and there. However we still need to record our solution video. We should be done that somewhat soon.

The Children's Hospital Toy Drive group is looking to receive permission from parents of Brooke, Paige, Robyn, Sydney, Tommy and Justin to drive to the Victoria General Hospital to drop off toys to the Pediatric Ward. We will be leaving the school at 10:30 to be at the Hospital for 11:00 and we hope to be back at the school during lunch. (Depending on the length of the visit.) If you give your child permission please write a note back to Mrs.Cunningham before Thursday.
Reflection #4
Today we printed out our survey but we didn't have enough time to hand it out. When we hand it out we will film it to be part of our implementation video.
Reflection 5
- I uploaded our videos to YouTube and posted the link on the blogger.
- I looked up the prices for how much the supplies for the earthquake kits cost.
Reflection day 4
Today we printed out sixty+ surveys and prepared to hand them out to classes. Unfortunately we ran out of time today, so we have emailed the teachers asking if we could do the survey tomorrow. We will also start to film our implementation video tomorrow.
Reflection
Today Sydney and I collected our used books and DVDs, and looked for boxes to store these items in. (We were unsuccessful) We collected toys from Mrs. Cunningham and cleaned them to get them ready for Thursday. Our group did our challenge/solution video. Last night Noah, Sydney and I went to Mayfair and went shopping to buy some extra toys we needed. We raised about $300 (just Sydney, Noah, Robyn, Justin and I.) We are looking to leave the school on Thursday at 10:30 to drop off the toys!
Reflection
Today, I was in the group challenge and solution Video. I along with Brooke collected the used items that our group was contributing and cleaned them in order to have them ready for Thursday. I sent an email to all the teachers asking if they have any washable toys in good condition that they could donate to our project. I collected toys from Mrs.Cunningham and Brooke and I tried to locate some boxes but were unsuccessful! Lat night Brooke, Noah and I went to Mayfair and bought the toys required to fill the list that was given to us. It was a successful trip.
Reflection of day 3
Today we finish survey and emailed the class rooms to see if we were able to come in on Tuesday for block 2. We also created and fine tuned our challenge video and uploaded it to the blog.
Reflection #3
Today we fine-tuned our survey and asked Mr. Gordon, Ms. Lizama, Ms. Bates, and Mr. Birney. We also made our challenge video, and uploaded it to the blog.
Reflection day 3
Today we fine-tuned our survey and asked classes if they would like to participate on Tuesday in block 2 via email. We also did our challenge video and uploaded it to the blog.

Reflection #3 Dec.7
Today I am working on questions for Claire who I will interview this weekend on a recording. I am also working on scripts for my challenge video and my final video. I have been viewing videos on youtube of people using artificial tools of training and I have been viewing natural horsemanship videos when I came across this documentary called 'The Path Of The Horse' it is about a lady who was a trainer, a judge, and a showing rider who used artificial tools on all of her horses who wanted to find a better path with horses to have a special bond that authors had with books that she was inspired from. So she sold her ranch and bought plane tickets to visit these authors to see what there secret were to be with horses. The documentary really explains what you can do with your horse and what you can have with your horse in a special bond. I really recommend you watch this documentary here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQUMAJCh1fA&feature=plcp

Caitlin's reflection
Reflection #1
My question: How can we encourage more natural ways in training horses instead of artificial ways of training?
I have gone through what artificial training tools are and have went to some sites that sell these tools and wrote down what they are supposed to be used for. I have also written down some popular trainers that are used in the BC area and all over North America. I have realized how many trainers use more natural ways in training there horses and training others. There are more trainers now that train naturally than artificially but there are still people that use lunging systems, side reins, and really strong ruff bits. I have written down in point form what natural ways in training that you can use by yourself. My next task will be interviewing the two trainers that either have a horse on our property or live there about what they think of lunging systems and what methods they use for natural horsemanship and how many horses they have worked with in the past. I am going to create a video of me working with my two horses with natural horsemanship and showing the benefits but also using some clips of horses using artificial methods in training and how it shows the difference between the two methods.

Today in our group, we started
typing out all the information that we got the day before. I realized
that more recent movies and TV series have women dressed to show off
their bodies more then they used to. The thing that stood out the
most to me was that girls in the media are often wearing just bathing
suits, or even less because that's what people, usually men want to
see. The next task our group is going to be working on is finishing
our first video, and starting out second.

and sexual ways. For example in music videos these days are girls
constantly dancing in small bathing suits or no clothes at all. What
stood out to me was how people think its ok to have girls known for
their body and not their brain. The next task my group and I are
working on is finishing our first video, and start thinking about
what we are going to do for our 2nd video.

Topic: How media disrespects
women
Today in our group, we went to
the library and looked up more videos and did some research. While
watching the videos it showed that women are mostly just seen as sex
objects and are shown to be dumb. I also saw that very few women are
in charge in the work that they do. What stood out to me most was
that all the music
videos that teens watch have tall, thin model type women who are
airbrushed. For women who don't look like that, it makes them
insecure and think that they need to be just like them. I believe
that the media is the biggest cause of women with eating disorders.
My next task for this project will be to research more and start
putting everything together.

Today in my group we researched
videos and collected facts on our topic. I learned that women are
commonly used for covers of movies, books, and comics to lure in
readers and watchers. I also learned that while there is a larger
number of male CEO's, women CEO's have the ability to accomplish
their goals and work better with their co-workers. My next task will
be to discover more tasks and add on to my previous work.

Today
my group went to the library again, and researched more videos about
our topic. I learned that very few women work in high power. What
stood out to me is how many videos are just women in bathing suits,
and they are all tall, thin and beautiful. The media is just making
other women that don't look like that feel insecure about their body.
It is estimated that 7
million American women have an eating disorder. Also one in 200
American women suffers from anorexia. Women should love their body's
just the way they are. What out next task is to start on thinking
about our first group video.

women
Today in our group, we came up
with our challenge and started to think about what we can do for our
project. We watched some videos about our topic so that it gave us
ideas on what to talk about, and that we had a good understanding of
what is actually happening in the media towards women. What stood out
the most to me was that women are not in power as much as men are,
and how men don't think women should be in charge. My next task will
be to research and find interesting things about women being
disrespected in the media, how people treat them, and how they
represent themselves.

Today in my group we each
focused on what our topic would be before researching. Rachel, Lucy,
and I watched inspiring videos to give us starting ideas on what we
will be researching. An interesting fact I came across was women and
men in the same job earn different wages, statistics show that men
not only have more power than women but they earn more money each
year than women. Our next task will be to find information and put it
together to form our project.

Today
my group, Rachel, Brittany, and I started brainstorming and
understanding our challenge thoroughly before we started researching
it.
Our
group went to the library and looked up some good videos about our
topic and just made sure we had a good understanding and what
actually happens in the media. What stood out to me the most was how
men over power women. How men think women are not capable of being a
person in charge. My next task is to research and find interesting
facts about our challenge.

Today we had a coaching session with Mr. McDonald and he suggested we focus on food sustainability at Stelly's. With his help we decided to do a survey of a few classes about local food. we are asking questions about when the growing season is and where the food is native to. we will give the survey to classes on Tuesday.

Written Reflection #2 Dec.6
Today I emailed a Q and A page to Johnathan Fields a natural horsemanship trainer in Abbotsford BC asking what he thinks of artificial tools being called training and if he every used these tools before he was exposed to natural horsemanship. I also emailed three questions to the BCSPCA about if they have had cases on horses that have been abused with these artificial tools, how many horses have been abused this way, and what tools?
I am also planning to create questions for a friend of mine who is a natural horsemanship trainer and boards her horse on our property for a interview this weekend for my project.
Reflection December 6th
On December 6th, our group worked on filming the video logs/reflections and did more researching. We made a script for for our first video introducing the "big idea" and giving some information about it. Including the outline of the project, what we plan to do and how it would effect people. We really want to make this topic bolder, as people don't pay as much attention to it as some other challenge topics. In the sense that we are not very far into the project yet, we still need to do more researching on the topic. Even though everybody in my group understands the purpose of our "big question/idea" we still need to solidify it.
Reflection #2 (December 6th)
On December 6th, I spent block 2 with my group filming our December 5th reflections. After that was completed and added on the blog, we did a bit more research on our Questions. We started block 3 with research, and finished the block with Kellie and I writing a script for the Outline/Proposal video. I think we got a good start on our project today.
Reflection #2
Today, we started to document a little further into what was in the boxes inside of the earthquake kit and also started to look at how many of each item, the cost per item, total cost, and where we should put the items that are needed if an earthquake was to happen. We as a group then looked at the British Columbia Emergency Management website and I looked at what we should do before, during, and after an earthquake has occurred and how to to keep you safe from your surroundings in your house.

Reflection day 2
Today we narrowed down our question even further and decided to focus on food sustainability at Stelly's. We started to write up a survey that we will distribute to classes tomorrow. The purpose of the survey is to find out what Stelly's students already know about sustainable food and the growing seasons and availability of foods they eat every day. The survery will also focus on foods that grow very well here but are not often eaten, like Swiss chard.
Reflection #1
Today went pretty well. We watched a couple of clips from Food Inc. and from the documentary called Fresh which is also about food. We worked on three questions and our main idea, which is Food sustainability and South Vancouver Island. Our three smaller questions were: What are success stories from local farms. Organic: is that sustainable? and How the appearance and price relate.
Reflection of day two
Today we had another coaching session With Mr Macdonald who had suggested that we make a survey finding out how well people know about where their fruit and vegetables come from and when their harvests are. We plan to distribute the surveys on Monday

Reflection of day one
I think the day went fairly well. We thought about what we going to do which took a lot of the time up but we choose to do local sustainable farming, We had then watched clips and trailers from Food Inc and Fresh as well as a Ted video by Micheal Pollan.

Reflection day 1
I think today went well. We thought about what we were going to do as a challenge and narrowed down our idea to sustainable farming in the local area. We watched clips from Food Inc. and a similar documentary called Fresh and a TED talk by Micheal Pollan. We have three guiding questions and we will do research on them tomorrow.

Reflection #1 Dec.5
Reflection #1 for earthqake's
Today we've figured out the main idea, earthquake and tsunami, and we've come up what we are going to do. We are going to teach people in the class what to do during and after a earthquake. We are also going o teach them what is in a kit. We also spoke to Mr. Westhaver and asked him to show us what is inside the earthquake kits so we could get an idea of what to tell people to get. Both us and Mr. Westhaver learned that the earthquake kits are less than perfect and he said that he would work on putting the essential items in them. We then looked up what should be in an earthquake kit.
Reflection #1
Our group has been split up in to two smaller sub topics, The Earthquake group which includes, Mitch, Carter, Teighen, and I. The other sub topic is The Tsunami Group.
~we went and took a look in the Earthquake boxes/ Tins. we need more supplies for future earthquakes near our peninsula.
~our group and I went and calculated how much supplies we would need to last for 72 hours. for 1100 students (not including the teachers yet).

Reflection #1
Today we figured out the big idea, Earthquake and Tsunami safety, and made the challenge, to teach everyone in the class how to keep their self safe while, and after an earthquake has occurred, and how to make a proper earthquake kit. We then spoke to Mr. Westhaver to show us what is in the schools earthquake kits, and then he learned that the kit was less than adequate and said he would do a better job in preparing the earthquake kit at a later date. After we saw Mr. Westhaver, we looked up what should be in a earthquake kit.
Reflection #1
Tuesday the 4th
-Our group split up into two sub-topics. The first: Earthquakes; which includes Donny, Carter, Teighen, and I. The second: Tsunamis, which incudes Kendra, Noah, and Jaedon.
-My sub-topic went around the school property and inspected the school's earthquake kits.
-To our dismay, the kits were less than optimal. So much so that I wouldn't even trust them for myself.
-We documented the contents of the kits, and calculated how much it would cost to have complete kits.
-Our sub-group decided to create a plan to get the school better prepared for the event of an earthquake.

CBL BLOG!!!
Hey folks,
this is where you will be posting your reflections and proposal videos for your Challenge Based Project.
Everyday, you need to post a video OR a written reflection that tells us: what you have done that day, what you learned doing it, what stood out for you and what your next task will be.
You will need to post three 'prepared' videos as well. Two will be during the course of the project, the other in the weeks following it.

You will need to post three 'prepared' videos as well. Two will be during the course of the project, the other in the weeks following it.
- The first one is a video that OUTLINES the challenge (what is it and why should we care) and PROPOSES your solution (what do you want to do and why will it create change?)
- The second is a video that FOLLOWS the IMPLEMENTATION of your solution. It may include footage of your work, images of what you have created or interviews with those you are working with. It is the documentation of your hard work.
- The third is your whole group REFLECTION where you will share what the project meant to you, what you learned, what worked for you and what you might do differently next time. This will be posted before the 21st of December.
